RIVERSIDE RETREAT

Riverside Retreat

Mixing elements of sleek modern handleless design with organic textures to connect with the stunning riverside setting.

THE CHALLENGE

Enjoying a position by the River Thames the house required a ground floor renovation to open the kitchen into the family living and dining area to better enjoy al fresco eating and outside views. With busy lifestyles bringing connections to the outside helps the whole family relax and spend time together.

The career couple with teenage children wanted to create a modern family kitchen that blended with the living areas whilst creating clear zones between the two. With everyone coming and going the kitchen needed to be practical but sleek, at the same time reflect their personality and interior design.

THE SOLUTION

Space and light were paramount in the design, as the kitchen was opening into other living areas, floating shelves instead of wall units helped connect the two spaces.

Defining each element of the kitchen allowed for specific zones providing light but privacy.  The cooking area was positioned behind a partial wall so that it wasn’t seen directly from the main living space.  Miele appliances were sleekly placed within the modern white matt units – integrated sheet rails achieved a true handleless look.

Ventilation vital in open spaces was incorporated through a smart Elica galaxy extractor with a white glass front.  A Quooker hot water tap was added to keep the clean lines of the room and reduce the need for a kettle.  Silestone’s blanco extreme worktop covered the L-shape part of the kitchen in keeping with the modern white design.

To further zone the kitchen from the living area a unique island was designed giving the family an extra social and dining space.  To connect to the overall design a brickwork design was created underneath the island to match brickwork placed on the other side of the living room – making it one room but with specific zones.  The eye-catching island was wrapped in Silestone’s kensho grey with a suede finish giving a peaceful, elegant look.

Engineered wood flooring added further texture to the client’s design and gave a natural organic finish bringing the outside in.

THE RESULT

The perfect mix of natural and modern elements of the design with light reflecting through created a relaxing and efficient environment.  The broken plan space with subtle blurred boundaries allowed the family to fluidly use the kitchen as well as adapting it to their changing lifestyles.

The overall effect was a cosier living and cooking space bringing the outside into their home with the benefits of enjoying modern living and al fresco dining by the river.
